Our Smart Baby: Toddler Reflux/GERD

Toddler Reflux/GERD

Our toddler had an upper GI done recently and we found out he had reflux which is also commonly called GERD. We have always thought he had reflux since he vomits very frequently and cannot tolerate certain foods. We were just waiting for the official diagnosis. Our toddler also arches his back and cries often. These are all symptoms of reflux/gerd in toddlers.

We have to take the results to his DR but I'm sure he will be prescribed medication and a reflux diet. Do any other parents out there have toddlers with reflux? What kind of diet does your child have?

Well, you know little man here has reflux. He takes Zantac for it and doesn't really have a diet. We know what irritates it worse so we try to avoid those types of food. Anything spicy is bad and for some reason at times milk is bad. It's like it sours on his stomach fast. He loves mexican so we just make that something we don't have very often and try to get his with very little seasoning. Also, no eating before bed. If they eat and lie down, it makes it worse. I think that it just makes it back up on them. Overeating can also cause problems. I know that your little guy doesn't have that problem, but once his belly starts calming down, his appetite may be ravenous. Our 4 yr old is able to tell us now when he needs his "tummy medicine". He will say he hates the flavor but he loves his tummy not to burn. Zantac is so nasty. We had it flavored orange and it didn't really help. Geez, sorry this is so long! You can delete it if you want lol.

My 2-year old has had reflux pretty much since birth. He also is allergic to cow's milk and eggs. He started on Pepcid, then the pediatrician switched him to Zantac, and then at 4 months old his spitting up was out of control so we took him to a pediatric GI. She prescribed Pepcid and Prevacid. He took the Prevacid for about 6 weeks and it got his reflux under control. However, he has been on Pepcid all his life and we're wondering if maybe we need to get a second opinion. He has a "sensitive gag reflex" and had a lot of texture issues. He's only been on complete table foods (no baby food or purees) for about 3 or 4 months (he's 24 months old). He's allergic to cow's milk, so he can't have any dairy, and he also is allergic to eggs. Since he's prone to food allergies, the allergist said to not give him any peanuts, treenuts, fish or shellfish until he's tested for them at age 3. We try to avoid acidic foods--no orange juice or citrus, and we really watch the tomato sauce--which is hard, because pasta is his favorite food.

My daughter is nearly 4 years old, she was originally diagnosed with Reflux as an infant after frequent projectile vomiting and underwent an Upper GI. We were told to keep her upright for 30 min. after feedings and that by 1 year most kids outgrow it.
Then, last year she started having vomiting spells after certain foods (Strawberries was our first scare), we knew she had been tested for allergies, and was clear, so we were puzzled. It would start with a fever, crying, and then vomiting. As soon as it was out she would again be happy!
After, a sudden bout with Milk vomiting, I took her in for another round of allergy tests, at that time the Pediatrician suggested it was her Reflux acting up and suggested a daily Reflux medication. After the allergy results came back negative, I knew i needed a better remedy to prevent my three year old from taking a drug for the rest of her life. Which is why I searched online, so far we are avoiding Milk, Acid foods (mainly fresh berries), and her least favorite Tomato Sauce. When she over indulges or has to go on a car ride after eating we give her half a Children's TUMS which thus far is working! It's scary when you think you have a generally healthy child and then unexpected your whole world is changed to keep them safe!
