Moms, Beware of Hand Sanitizers

I was reading through the news today on Yahoo and came across this frightening story of how toxic hand sanitizers really are.

Now, I'm not saying that I was careless about hand sanitizers before but I sure didnt think about the toxicity on it and since we use hand sanitizers when we go out shopping our out to eat as a family because we don't want to catch every illness that is going around, this story really caught my attention.

Hand sanitizers are now being listed as intoxicants via the Poison Control center and for good reason. The article goes on to talk about how the alcohol in the hand sanitizer is like the alcohol in liquor. For the rest of the story go on over to the yahoo health news, but first tell us what you think here.

Do you use hand sanitizers on your children? Are you concerned about the potential for abuse by older children such as teens? Will you keep hand sanitizers in a different place now that you are more aware of the dangers of it or are doctors simply making too big of deal out of this?

When is Whole Milk Ok?

Do you give your one year old whole milk or two percent? I have heard alot of confusion on this subject. In some states, pediatricians tell parents not to give your one year old whole milk. In other states, doctors tell us that it is what is best for a one year old while the child is still growing and needs the fat, which they are not getting from the formula anymore. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition and The American Heart Association Nutrition Committee both agree that fat and cholesterol should not be restricted until your child reaches the age of two.

My son just turned two and he is now on two percent and skim milk. While he was one, he always had whole milk. I also would only give him about 16 oz of milk a day at the most, which is more than recommended. He is a little chunky for his age, and I am glad that I am now able to change the type of milk he consumes. My oldest son was the same way, he wanted to drink whole milk all day and was a little over weight by the time he was two, but now he is like a chicken. Seriously, a chicken.

Parents should do what they think is best and what their doctors tell them about milk. Even though different states and pediatricians have totally different recommendations, I am wondering where the confusion is coming from. If you read this blog, let us know what you think. In your state, do they recommend the whole milk until the age of two? Or do they recommend a less fatty milk?
